MELAKA, Feb 22 — The targets of at least one cup in the Malaysian League competition and runners-up in the Super League are seen as realistic for the Melaka United team in the 2020 season.
Melaka United Football Association (MUSA) president, Damian Yeo Shen Li said it was a challenge to the squad under chief coach Zainal Abidin Hassan to realise the aspiration of the supporters.
He believed their thorough preparation since the end of last year, other than the capability of the player line-up combining young and experienced players, could provide a challenge in the competitive league.
‘’After witnessing several pre-season actions and their current performance, we can see the available squad are in high spirit and could vie with the other elite teams.
‘’It is not impossible for us to achieve the target of second spot and simultaneously improve on last year’s achievement,’’ he told reporters after a function to introduce the Melaka United team and the launching of a new jersey for the 2020 season in Banda Hilir, here today.
In the mean time, Damian said a budget of RM14 million had been set aside for the Melaka United team for the Malaysian League this season and he also gave his assurance that the problem of outstanding salaries of the players would not be repeated to ensure a smooth progress for the team this season.
Meanwhile, IN IPOH, Perak chief coach, Mehmed Durakovic hoped the Bos Gaurus squad would finish in the top three in the Super League competition this season.
Perak, which were also the 2018 Malaysia Cup champions, were merely in fifth place in the Super League behind Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), Pahang, Selangor and Kedah.
Conceding that the Super League this season would be quite challenging, Mehmed stressed that it was no obstacle for his players to take the challenge to the choice teams like Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), Kedah, Selangor and Terengganu.
‘’Despite losing several main players this season, with the combination of the young and experienced players we have this season, I can say we will try (top three),’’ he told a media conference after introducing the Perak players for the 2020 season and launching the new jersey at the Indera Mulia Stadium, here today.
Commenting on the meeting with Terengganu in the first Super League action on Feb 29, Mehmed said his players’ preparation was proceeding smoothly and they were ready to face off against the squad under coach Nafuzi Zain.
‘’We have fielded good players at the pre-season match in Singapore and during the Unity Shield match against Kedah prior to this. So, I feel we are prepared to meet Terengganu,’’ he added.
